NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing Monday morning after a passenger lit a match to disguise the scent of flatulence, authorities said.
The Dallas-bound flight was diverted to Nashville after several passengers reported smelling burning sulfur from the matches, said Lynne Lowrance, spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority. All 99 passengers and five crew members were taken off and screened while the plane was searched and luggage was screened.
The FBI questioned a passenger who admitted she struck the matches in an attempt to conceal a "body odor," Lowrance said. She had an unspecified medical condition, authorities said.
"It's humorous in a way but you feel sorry for the individual, as well," she said. "It's unusual that someone would go to those measures to cover it up."
The flight took off again, but the woman was not allowed back on the plane. The woman, who was not identified, was not charged in the incident.

What I want to know is how she got the matches on the plane to start with...with all the "security" measures in place. You can't even take body lotion on the planes anymore, but she got matches on there. Yea, I feel sorry that she had to go to those measures, but she really should have thought before hand lol.

I can't believe someone would actually light a match on an airplane. She had to know with the way the world is today, they would land the plane and question her. It is kind of funny and does make you feel sorry for the condition she has. But there has to be a better way of concealing the odor than to light a match like that.

I feel for the poor woman. The embarassment she went through because of it. I agree what she did was not the smartest of moves but to have to then explain why she did and probably have a good number of people upset with her had to be difficult. I'm surprised no one saw her light the match though.
