I have one daughter who resides in the Austin area. I would like to move to Texas, but not necessarily Austin. I am trying to find out what major city, or cities, in the state have the coldest climate. Can someone please help an outsider?

You're looking for the coldest climate in Texas? How cold is cold? Are you coming from way north Minnesota or somewhere a little more temperate and simply don't like the intense heat? Also, what are your objections to Austin? I'm from around there and it's an amazing city. If you really don't want to move that close to Austin there are dozens of smaller towns around Austin that might be more to your liking. What are you looking for? As a local I might be able to recommend a city for you.

Just pick the DFW metroplex, it has all that you are looking for and is close enough to Austin for visits with your daughter.

I currently live in Austin, having checked out all of the major cities in Texas and finding it the most open-minded and diverse. Not sure how large of a city you are looking for, how warm you are willing to get, nor how far (driving time) you are willing ot be from your daughter. The farther north you go the colder it will get. The next Metroplex up from Austin is Dallas/Fort Worth. Waco is a little closer and smaller. Heading a good bit closer to Austin and getting tinier (and warmer) are Taylor and Georgetown.

I'm from New Braunfels, and it's a GREAT mini-city! I would say a town, but it seems bigger than a typical town. Anyhow, it's in the hill country and it can get pretty cool down there. Look it up at http://www.newbraunfels.com/ and see all the sites! Enjoy Texas!!!
