Just checking. I am attending an online class for court reporting just so that I can be a scopist.

That sounds neat. Is it something that you have to be in attendance in the court room to do or can you telecommute? I've heard the term, but never really understood what they do. Why do they call it that and not court room reporter?

Scopist are not court room reporters. They work for the reporter. In laymans terms, they are proofreaders of the court reporters work. This job can be (and usually is) done entirely from home.
