Whats the importance of days like Fathers day, Mothers day n all.

Have any of you wondered why we celebrate fathers day and mothers ady and valentine's day and all the other days...is it because our friends and neighbours do? Or is it because we ill treat our fathers and mothers so atleast honour them on one day.... Can anyone help me on this...
