My 1999 Ford F150 8 Cyl, 4.6 liter engine has recently started making a knocking sound. The mechanic put it on a machine and couldn't find anything wrong with the engine. Mechanics where I work thought it is coming from the exhaust system and might be the catalytic converter (of which there are two--why?) I hate to replace these converters at a cost of close to $2000 if that isn't what is wrong. Can you help?

Chevy has the same problem with their trucks knocking when you first start up. They told me that it was because the pistons had to warm up.. I didn't buy that answer.. didn't have any problems with the truck.. but we traded it for a quad cab as soon as it was right side up.
Try searching for TSB ( technical service bulletins) Sometimes they have them for vehicles. The car manufactures don't have to put a notice out for them because they are not recalls and usually are not what they consider saftey related. If you vehicle fall's within their specifications and they have a fix.. they will usually cover it. I had that happen with a GMC Jimmy and the EGR valve about ago.. there was a service bulletin on it and it feel within their specifications to fix it.
