Beware of spiders

One of my friends has a one year old little girl. Her little girl started to swell and she didn't know why. When she got to the emergency room, she found out that her child had been bitten by a spider. Not only had the spider bit her. It had laid eggs under the skin in her hand. The doctors went under the babies skin to remove it. What precautions should be taken to prevent spider bites? Do you know of any old home remedies to heal them?
