how do i advance quickly in empire earth multiplayer

hello, i play empire earth multiplayer, and i was wondering how do these other people that i play against advance the epochs so quickly. i was wondering if there were any kind of tactic to gathering resources quickly so i could advance fast. for example: by the time i reach the dark ages, these other people already have airplanes and such, and that is why i always lose. i want to be able to do the same thing so i could be in competition with them. these people amaze me. i've tried everything, but i still dont even come close to their playing level. any answers you could give me would be greatly appreciated. thank you,
