What makes a neighbourhood nice/nightmarish to live in?

I like where I am, because this is a peaceful neighbourhood, and there is a supermarket only 3-5 minutes walk away and transport to the centre of town (London) is pretty good. I am resident in a large suburban housing development, in fact, so large that it qualifies as a town in its own right. Sometimes there is noise; but not too much. Some folks are not as lucky as me. What are the things that make a neighbourhood pleasant (Parks? shops? nice people?) or unpleasant? (Noise? Do you have thin walls and noisy neighbours? Graffiti?) Let's talk neighbourhoods. Carl

We live in an area that is very quiet. Even in the summertime when the school kids are on vacation. There is a wooded area near our home. We have many birds that come to our feeders. It is great to watch them. Many years ago we lived in town. The noise was terrible. The road we lived on was well traveled. You could hear the sound of cars buzzing by at all hours of the day. The streetlights would shine into the house. Now the only light that shines into our home is the moonlight. How delightful is that.

I'm pleased for you, EB; constant noise is not healthy for the human soul. The back of my house and of my immediate neighbours' is something of a wilderness of trees, chock-full of birds and squirrels; I feel honoured to be among them. They don't bother me and I don't bother them. I'm only yards from a very bust main road, but I don't hear any of it where I am, off the beaten track, far from the madding crowd. Carl

Sorry, I meant busy, not bust (for the main road). I must pay greater attention to my final draft before firing it off. Carl
