Celebrities: Why are people so Obsessed/Fascinated with them?

Why is this? Why do we focus so much of our time in energy on stuff like: why isn't brittney wearing any panties, this couple split, this couples getting married, Brangelina got so much money for pictures of their baby.
People fly to the impulse racks at supermarkets and drug stores just so they can read something that has absolutley no affect on them, their community and the country they live in. Its meaningless knowledge, it's exploitation.
Can't people just watch movies, listen to music, watch tv shows, read books and so forth with out having to get all caught up with that persons life.
Do you do this? why?

We are fascinated by celebrities because in a way they establish our cultural boundaries, setting trends that we follow.
We live vicariously through them and their wild lives. But at the same time, we don't have to actually do these things we fantasize about--or live these crazy lifestyles--we get to stay in the relative safety of our "normal" lives.

MissGia: I understand how you mean, it might be due to the fact that, people/fans alike want to read of their foul-ups. Living in the light, highlights you. Your achievements are highly noted but, so are your faults. It's in those faults that us 'normal' people can say, 'OH! Look what so-and-so did!' or 'Hahaha, look how stupid so-and-so looks here!', because it gives a backwards sense of saying 'Oh, they're not perfect'. Finding an Achille's Heel in the God/dess persona we designed for them, to keep deadly reminder that...They're only human.
...'Sides, some of us might've stepped in dog piddle before. It's just no one's around to take a picture.

People are fascinated with Celebrities coz they see them as the ones they wanna be.....Also that only thier positive sides are highlighted...noone ever shows the negative side of thier personality

i guess people see celebrities as a form of role model. they make up their mind to be that person or they want o become that person. you must admit that movies or a movies has had a great impact on one or more of our lives, they literally change the way we think, the way we live, they change our everyday lives and the greatest of all they change the world. now to be in a movies that changes one or more aspects in our lives makes you want to know a little more about the person who has done this in that particular movie. i think that's why we are so obsessed/fascinated with movies and celebrities. thank you.

well we are so obssessed wid them coz they lead such a fantastic lifestyle... they get all the stuff we always wanted and more!!
we like to here abt them coz they r living our fairy stories!!

They do not live fairy tales. They all have ups and downs just like us. Just because they have money that they can spend lavishly does not mean they live the fairy tale life. I've come by some really rich people in my life. People who had it all, nice cars, nice homes, nice things..but they are miserable.

the young pepole worship celebrities ,they need idols in their life.besides common life is boring pepole want some stuff.finally most pepole want to be famouse,they can share it via this way.

celebs why shouldn't they be, people are obsessed about them thats why are celebrities, if people weren't then they would be like you and me, i think some people think that being a celebrity they may have something special or something they can learn from them.

I have no clue. I personally have enough to deal with my own life and the drama it can bring let alone worry about what someone else is doing, who they're seeing, what they wear, etc. I could care less. I enjoy them in their job, acting or singing, etc. and that's it!

I do believe that with the advent of technology our life has become simpler than ever and as a result people have more time at hand and this..obsession with the well known and famous is just one of the way we chose to spend the time we have though we know that it is just a waste of time.

dear frnd,iam of the very same opinion as u'rs,i like readin,movies,music n stuffs,but interests differ,n that never means one's interests are superior/inferior to others.when people r interested in britney spears they have this temptation to very subtly accept her as their roll model in their subconnsience.they try to act like her,n want to be,if not another Britney,still something close.they come to limelite more than those who prefer other tastes like sittin in solitude but in company of music or books or movies.it doesn't mean that people with these interests r less in no:,jus that they don prefer the limelite...

I think we can do that. I guess the reason I believe some people become so obsessed is that is about the only news we can watch without becoming thoroughly depressed. It's a harmless fascination for many so they don't have to think about all the really terrible things going on in the world.

I will read things I see online or the occasional magazine but it is not something I have to know about everyday. I feel that alot of the problems celebrities face is due to the fact that no part of their life is out of the public eye. I know that is due to their profession but I think sometimes it is taken too far.

I am also fascinated to these sorts of things even if I know that it is a merely waste of my time..but with the fametheir celebrity status we want to attach iurself with them which results in ur attraction towards them...so our ear is always open to hear what they are eating,what they are dressung, what they are doing from their toilet to their bedroom all are fascinating for us....
