Does anyone out there really enjoy working on their own, or their friends, cars? I enjoy it so much I have been known to help someone who is stranded on the side of the road.

I don't know if joy is the exact word I would use while working on cars but I have done it. I use to help my dad and my husband has no patience for it. Although he has stopped beating on them when a nut or bolt don't come loose when he wants it to. I think I find it interesting. Its like a big puzzle.

Big puzzle. Your point is well taken. I never quite thought of it in just that way before, but you're right.Thank you for your response.

i enjoy working on cars. including my own and those of other and i plan to some day open my own shop. and actually im currently in the process of getting my ASE certification. I have spent several years studying under other mechanics and also working on my own projects. I like the mechanical aspects and the body work aspects of the job. ive painted cars done collision repair and ive even rewired an entire car using nothing but the wiring diagram and my own two hands.

That sounds like a very worthwhile goal. I wish you the best of luck in making this goal come full circle. I have learned a lot from many other mechanics and other people, but the main thing I've learned is to approach every problem with an open mind. As someone once said: "Minds are like parachutes, they work best when open." That must have been quite a job to rewire an entire car with just a wiring diagram. What made it necessary?

The only thing I can do is change a tire (if there is a spare available, or even 'the donut' (as I've heard it being called) handy. The only other things I do is check my oil & antifrezze/coolant & fill when necessary, as well as driving a short distance & then checking my transmission fluid levels. I have also replaced a couple of fuses & a signal relay. Some things, if you can do it yourself, it can be a learning experience, & a lot cheaper than paying a mechanic to do it for you. I could probably change my own oil, but the place I get my 3 month / 3000 mile oil change also checks other things for me in addition to the oil change itself.

As Clint Eastwood said in one of his many movies: "It's a wise man that knows his limitations." If you have a garage that you can work in, that makes it better, too. I wish I had a garage to do some of the work I can do in, it would make it so much easier.

I enjoy working on my own cars. Why pay a mechanic if you can do the work yourself.

That's the spirit. Think positive. Be positive. Approach every problem as if you can figure it out. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask someone who could be more knowledgeable. Most people like to show off how much they know.

when i was single i enjoyed working on my cars and when i got married my husband refuses to let me mess with the cars. Not that he does either he would rather take it somewhere and have it done "right" he just does not like to see a girl do something better lol
