This is interesting. We have an indoor in-ground pool and we have a gas heater. What you are doing is very innovative but it seems like a lot of work. Since your pool is small, it might be easier to break down and buy a small gas or electric heater and have a pool tech come out and glue some pipes together and have it run into your pump. You wouldn't need a big heater - in fact go to www.intheswim.com and see if they have small heaters for above ground pools. It might take some of the frustration away. If you decide you want to keep your current method, make sure you have a good-fitting pool cover on the pool while you are attempting to heat it or you will lose a good amount of the heat within minutes if it is outdoors.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I appreciate what you are saying and, of course, we can always go buy a gas or electric heater and have the tech guy set it up for us, but what is the fun in that? We are not in a state of frustration, we are creative inventors who like to experiment with possibilities, think outside the box and discover innovative ways of doing things. I sense that you feel we lack the intellence to spend the money and have professional set us up with a pool heater. That is not what we are all about. We love the challenge of finding new and creative ways of doing things. The wood fired pool heater we are experimenting with now may never work like a gas or electric heater but we will have benifited from the learning experience and the challenge. We posted on this site for information from people of a like mind who can offer suggestions on how to improve our invention. Got any ideas??? jasperzoe

hey there, i have a "tube in shell" steam boiler salvaged from a local bakery when they upgraded. dam thing is about 100 years old and as big as a pickup. water flows through the tubes while the heat/smoke travels through the shell. it has a flue with a damper on top. i will need to build a fire box for it and of course plumb it up. check your local scrap yards and commercial boiler shops. might find one cheap. tom.
