The black box is a recording device. It holds the information of how the plane was operating at the time of the crash. It is also called the flight data recorder. The information contained in the black box will give investigators clues as to what might have caused the accident. And there have been cases where the box was severaly damaged and was still able to have the data retrieved.

The black box can survive a lot more than the passengers on the plane can, God forbid something happens to the plane and it goes down or something. When they locate the black box they can tell what happenned on the plane, or at least get some direction as to what went wrong.
