Starting Jan 1st, trash companies in my state will not take leaves or yard item

Has anyone had their trash companies stop taking leaves and branches? My state passed legislation that states that trash companies will no longer take bagged leaves or branches. We have to find our own way of getting rid of these items without burning them as well. Is this ridiculous? How do you feel about this?

Where I live they won't take them either but they do have a fall and spring special pick-up when they will take these items but only for people in town. But I can burn them here as I live in the country. I have heard that it is good to mow over your leaves and let them stay on the lawn as it puts nutrients back into the soil.

Leaves are bad for the lawn if they are left whole. My boyfriend studied landscaping in college but I can't find any of his books but here is a website I found that you might want to see.....

Yeah I would of said burn them but since you can't I don't know how you'd get rid of them.

Where I live they will still take them, if I call ahead to let them know I have some. We are still allowed to burn them if you want to though. We have a spot at the edge of our property that is a little wooded so we usually put them back there. We have a neighbor that does a compost pile, so he usually takes whatever he needs to fill up the compost pile. So I guess you can say we recycle them lol.

This has been the situation where I live for a long time. I do tend to cheat at times, by simply bagging some of the waste and placing it in the dustbin. Some of the remaining grass and leaves are then scattered across the garden to disperse them.
I have never been given a logical reason for this, and nobody has offered a realistic solution as to how I am supposed to dispose of any garden waste.

I did not know that this was the case anywhere and though my state was trying to be the first to do this but apparently other places are doing the same thing. Our best option is to blow the leaves back into the wooded area and hope it does not blow right back on us. Some people will probably cheat here as well. :-) It makes me wonder what other kind of strange and silly rules are going to come out next.

That's silly, so how exactly are you suppose to take care of those leaves and branches? That's just ridiculous alright.

Wow! What state? Your not allowed to burn them but they will not pick them up? Why? Did they give an explanation as to why?
I guess the real problem isn't why...but now, how are you supposed to get rid of it? Take it to the dump yourself and pay more? Isn't that the point of paying for road side trash collection? I would think that as long as it does not exceed your bag limit per day, it should not matter.
I have lived in different states. And they have always picked them up. Some states require having a seperate day just for yard waste so the company can process it as compost...but to refuse to pick it up completely, is insane.
I am sure that there will probably be a lot of illegal burning of yard waste. And then what will happen is more risk of fire spreading.
Wow...you state just opened a can of worms!
What state is that? I don't want to move there!

I did not even know about it this til my mom told me about it and my neighbor as well. We have to take it to the dump ourselves or in our cases put the leaves in the woods in the front and in the back woods instead. This is in Delaware. I am sure people will be burning them as well. It is hard to believe and wonder if other states will be doing this too.

That is rather odd. Where I am the normal trash company doesn't take these things. The local government supplies a trash pick up for bulk items like leaves and tree limbs. Maybe you should call the court house and see if there is a similiar pick up in your area.

I think that is ridiculous. Why are they saying that? Where will you get rid of them? We don't have that problem. I live in the desert. No leaves. But, I do have to take my trash can a 1/4 of a mile down the road for trash pick up, and that isn't easy over dirt, holes and rocks.

Well a really easy way to get rid of the leaves etc is to start your making your own compost heap. Its really wonderful for the garden. About the branches, I am not sure what you can do with that. You might need to get one of those shredders, so that you can also add the pulp to the compost heap. Good luck!
