Are aliens remotely monitoring us????

If indeed an advanced civilization exists with technology far beyond ours, why would they ever physically travel here? We are all aware of the enormous difficulties involved in interstellar travel. So why even attempt it unless absolutely necessary? Our space agencies are relying more and more on unmanned probes and spacecraft to learn more about our surroundings in space. Our telescopes are becoming more and more powerful, able to see farther and farter into the distant reaches of space. Why woudn't an alien civilization follow the same progression? If aliens are indeed aware of our presence, why wouldn't they simply monitor us remotely with a super powerful telescope of sorts? (If they even care of course.) If they needed to physically travel here, why woudn't they simply send something similar to a robot? Your thoughts?
