I am currently training to be a counsellor and was wondering how people feel when they find out one of their friends is a counsellor. I have found that a lot of people think I am going to read their mind or psychoanalyse them every minute.

Thats the thing with my counselling I don't give advice. I'm studying person centred counselling and its all about getting the person to look at their problems themselves as the person is the best person to know their problems. So if you asked for my opinion I would probably turn it back on you and ask you what you think.

It sounds as if you are going to do very well in this field.

I think it would be great! I wouldn't think that you would read my mind. I would hope that you would be taught methods that help people learn to understand themselves or others. I have always know couselers are humans they just have learned how to use tools we don't somehow missed sometimes in life. Thanks and God Bless you in what you are doing!

You will probably find that your family and friends will expect you to listen to and solve all of their problems for them. I'm a Nurse Practitioner, and I get all of the family calls whenever anyone has anything going on. I don't mind, of course. You just have to make it clear to people that for their own good they should establish care with their own healthcare provider and follow their advice, whether it be a medical provider or a mental health counsellor. Good Luck in your Career!

I can understand you will get calls also. I think it's important as well when not at work that we need to switch off and family need to understand this. I am already getting a lot of people talking to me, but in some respects I don't mind thats what I'm here for and if I can help someone it makes me feel good about myself, but we have to switch off too. And your right it is important that a person has their own health care provider mixing work and family isn't good.
