Drinking and pregnancy

We all know that drinking during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol syndrome & other problems for the baby. Yet some mothers do not think or care about this. It is sickening. Granted there are some mothers who have an occassional drink BEFORE they ever find out they are pregnant (like if they are a week pregnant & their period isn't past due yet), but stop completely when they realize they are pregnant. What about you? Any thoughts? Feelings? Stories? I drank on New Years Eve before I ever knew I was pregnant. After I missed my period I looked at the calander & found out I was like 4 days pregnant & I cried my eyes out. Fortunately my son was completely healthy & the dr told my 1/2 a glass that I didn't even finish showed no adverse affects. After that incident I took a pregnancy test before ever taking another drink.

smoking is also a big problem during pregnancy and after the baby is born. Second-hand smoke kills!

Thank you both for responding. Yes, drinking is bad for the baby & second-hand smoke is too.

Would you believe some mothers to be in the UK (genereally teenage mums) smoke during pregnancy to try and have a smaller baby so it hurts less and does less visual damage to their bodies. Can you believe that? How can someone endanger their babies life like that? It really is beyond belief how anyone could smoke or drink during pregnancy.

I have heard this before. Don't think it is just the UK. They do this in the US too. I have really large babies, first was 9lbs8oz. The second would have been bigger if I would have carried her to term. I had an 8lb premature baby, my body just couldn't carry her anymore. No way would I do this to them just so they would have been smaller. I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant with them. And now I have no intentions of starting back.

With all 3 of my children I had been using birth control - as well as my husband. We had wanted to wait before having children, so those first couple of weeks I didn't know I was pregnant & it does happen. Know KNOWING your pregnant & continuing drinking - women should know better, I agree.

I know of people who has been totally wasted beforethey knew they were pregnant bu to have a drink after you know, well that isn just wrong. Everything you take in - so does your baby and this you should live by for the next 9 months. If u can not be wthout a drink for 9 months, then u are not ready for a child!

Thank you for your comment. I completely agree, if a mother cannot take care of the baby pre-birth what makes her so much more capable post-birth?

The child should be taken care of before its birth.

Exactly a baby in utero, results in the baby we hold in our arms & rock to sleep & swaddle & eventually grows up into a toddler, then child, then teenager, then into an adult (& maybe into a parent)

I drank once before I knew I was pregnant, but of course I never had another drop after I found out I was pregnant. I was not really upset about drinking that one time because my doctor said drinking once in the early stages does not cause any harm to your baby. My daughter was and is completely healthy.

I understand where you're coming from. I felt horrible about that New Years Eve drink that I had before finding out I was pregnant. Glad you had a healthy baby. :)

Women should be careful during pregnancy and eat or drink only nutritious stuff.

Yes thy should because what they consume has the potential to make a healthy baby, or severly hanicap a baby (but genetics can also cause disabilities too, so not every disabiled child had a mother who drank during pregnancy).

Luckily I do not drink. When I found out I was pregnant with my son I was so excited. Of course I knew I was pregnant before I ever went to the doctor but it was official when I visited the doctor. I kept thinking about the baby. Never once did I ever stop thinking about the baby I was carrying. That is why I don't understand why women, knowing they are pregnant, could smoke or drink or anything that would harm the baby. We all know that smoking and drinking, while pregnant, can cause abnormalities and problems in the baby. I don't understand why anyone would ever want that for their child. I recently talked to one of my friends who was pregnant around the same time I was. She said she didn't find out she was pregnant until 6 months in. During this 6 months she was drinking and smoking like she normally does. I was sick, how could she not know she was pregnant and why would she be drinking and smoking. I just don't understand it and it makes me so angry that some women act like this and their babies have to pay the price. I mean I even called the doctor before taking a tylenol while I was pregnant.

There should be licences for people who want to be parents. People like that should never be parents.

WHEN WE AS MOTHERS FALL PREGNANT WE SHOULD PUT THE WELFARE OF THE UNBORN CHILD FIRST BECAUSE THE DAMAGE THAT CAN AND DOES OCCOUR CAN BE SO HORRIFIC . If a women takes a drink before she knows she is pregnant she can't be blamed for that but if she continues to drink after she learns she is pregnant then its her fault whatever happens to that baby.
