Firewall is a software or an hardware device that filters all incoming packets received from internet. It's a sort of shield for your system. It will filter and stop communication from others pc to your pc (XP with Service Pack 2 has a firewall that can filter only incoming packets). There are so many viruses and worms on the web that try to enter your system to infect it without user intervention. A firewall will block them from entering your system. Best firewalls can filter outbound communication too. So if you want to block access to internet to a software, or you have a spyware in your system or a virus, it will not send your personal information outside your system. You will soon identify the viruses, because your firewall will tell you who is trying to "go out" on internet. If you want a free firewall, you can download Jetico Firewall 1.0. All this only if you don't have a router with firewall inside (hardware)

Firewall - Firewall
Firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.
