Gay marriage/ civil unions in a purely secular perspective, your thoughts?

There are many religions. Not every human being is religious. Some humans are athiests. In a purely civil/ secular perspective, don't you think that two individuals who want to "marry" their identities, material possessions, families, etc together through a simple civil procedure should have that procedure available to them. After all, they pay taxes too, and they want to care for each other until death do they part. Why shouldn't they have all the benefits/ provisions of marriage available to them?
