should i continue friendship with this guy?

hey, just a couple of days ago, i met a guy and his family in the train.ofcourse we had a comfortable general talk but i could notice him observing me.after getting down at some place somehow he came to me and gave his contact info if there's any need as though it was obvious to exchange our cell numbers.and he says he wants to make friends with me and he likes me.what should i say now? how should i respond? there's nothing wrongto extend helping hand, but how can anyone believe if it would be just friendship. i dont want to get into troubles later. how should i tel him without hurting as he is decent guy and i shouln't seem to be over reacting to this!! help me pls.
