Baby's toes are gnawed off by a six week old pit bull puppy.

I just heard on the news tonight that a six week old pit bull puppy gnawed 4 toes off of a baby. The parents were asleep by the baby during all this. Now, the fate of the puppy is being decided by a judge. The parents are going to be charged with neglect or child desertion. My question is why didn't the parents get up when they heard the baby cry being that they were right beside them. I feel the parents neglected their baby as well as the 6 week old puppy. I'm beginning to think some people need to take classes and pass before being allowed to have animals. I don't think this is a pit bull issue because this could have happened with any puppy. What are your thoughts on this? If you want to read the article here is the link: http://www.ksla.com/Global/story.asp?S=5799008

I think you should have to pass a class and get a license to have a child!

That might be a great idea considering how many irresponsible parents there are.

I'm sorry it had to be a Pitbull. That will make people hate them even more. I cannot believe the parents didn't hear that baby crying. Also, what was a 6 week old puppy doing away from it's mother? It shouldn't be away from it's mother that young! I don't blame the puppy at all. But I'm sure his fate has been sealed.

That's the sad part. As if pit bulls don't get enough of a bad rap. I feel so bad for the puppy.

i know it's not like it was the dogs fault.. it was just a puppy.. puppys chew! It's more on the parents and they should have the baby taking away for neglect and the puppy.. but they should hurt the puppy in the matter.. He didn't know any better!

yes the parents are to blame completely!!! im sorry too that it had to have been a pit bull. people are going to think that pit bulls are fierce when they're really not. i love dogs and im sure that little puppy thought the childs foot was a toy of some sort. puppies that young are just trying to chew everything and it's the parents fault that it was the child's toes the puppy gnawed. what kind of parents are those?! and what kind of dog owners are those?! i think they should not only be charged with child neglect but also with puppy neglect!

According to the article, the puppy could have thought it was nursing or trying to. I also love pit bulls and have one. They always get a bad rap, but what about other breeds that attack people? You hardly hear about those attacks. But yes I think they should have to be charged with both also. After all their baby relied on them to keep him safe and so did the 6 wk. old puppy. Regardless if it is a pit bull or some other breed.

I can't believe they didn't hear the baby crying. He must have been screaming. When I take a nap with my grandson, I can feel every move he makes. And no animals are allowed in the bedroom, not even the cats. I don't think it is the dog's fault at all. Its the parents fault.

I also have to wonder why the parents didn't hear the baby crying but also how did the dog get to the babies feet. This was a one month old baby, there clothing is usually covering the feet at the age. They wear all in one type. Let alone the fact that the baby was sleeping in a car seat. Was it on the floor because if not how did the puppy get close enough to. Something seems wrong with the whole story. Like they aren't telling all of it. The dog is not to blame. It was too young to know what it was doing. I know some will try and blame him because he is a pit bull but that is wrong to do. Pit bulls can be wonderful pets and very loving. It all depends on how they are raised. Any breed can be raised to be mean. I just hope the dog doesn't have to suffer because the human's in his life didn't have any common sense.

I agree with what you said about the puppy. Hopefully he will be allowed to live.

The parents are completely to blame. They should have checked on the baby when the baby first started crying. What could the parents have been doing that they didn't notice this going on right beside them. This makes me sick. It should not affect the reputation of pit bulls as it was the owners not the puppies fault.

The parents are the ones to blame here, why was the baby in a car seat and them asleep to begin with? As the mother of 2 children, my daughter only being 4 months old, I would never go to sleep with my child in a car seat in the first place, secondly, I would not leave any kind of animal with in reach of my child while I was sleeping. That is just negligence and irresponsible. These parents should not be allowed to have their child back, I would be afraid for the child's safety and they should not be allowed to have another pet either unless they take some kind of classes.

Yeah, this is neglect. You never, ever leave a child unattended with a dog. it doesn't matter if the dog is a fourteen year old sweetheart of a mutt that's never so much as growled. Dogs are animals, and a baby has no idea how to handle an animal safely. Animals get scared, animals get confused, animals act out like animals. Parents need to keep an eye on children when there is an animal involved - for everyone's safety! Stuff like this makes me really pissed off. And you know the parents are going to cry foul and claim they're being falsely prosecuted.

Yes it has made me so mad too. You know the baby had to have cried at some point. Why did it take so long for them to notice this happening? That baby depended on them to keep it safe. And as for the puppy it is a baby as well at that age. People like that don't need pets or kids if you ask me.

That is sad for the baby. Poor thing. The parents should of put the dog in another room or they should of shut their bedroom door until morning. Also, how can a parent not hear their child cry? The baby had to of been crying. My sister had a Pit when her first born daughter was born and for a while they kept the bedroom door shut, so the dog wouldn't mess with the baby or them during the first few months. It's just a sad story. I still don't understand why the parents didn't wake up.

I don't understand that either. I guess either they were on something or just laziness.

I think the parents were irresponsible in regards to both there chid and the puppy, and as for the puppy nursing on the childs toes, the puppy was probebly starving, and it will more than likely be very hard for the puppy to be rehabilitated or even for it to find a new home with the story going to the papers and all! and as for the parents, they should be the ones put down!!

Yes, its just so sad for the baby and the puppy. Some people just aren't meant to be parents or animal owners.

I think they found out later it was not the dog but another pet that did it. I have a feeling mommy and daddy must be partiers and not nearly responsible enough for a dog much less a child.

I really think something else must've happened. How can a baby get his toes gnawed off and the parents not hear him scream? I think they said the baby was right next to them. No, this is not a pit bull issue. That precious puppy doesn't deserve to die.

I heard like a week later that the mother claimed the ferret did it instead of the Pit Bull. I haven't heard anything else on the story though.

Awww that poor baby. If the parents were right next to the baby then they should have heard the child cry. I know myself being a mom I dont miss a thing when it comes to my kids. The only way I might not hear my kids is if I am on a DR prescribed medication that knockes me out, then it is up to my husband to get up with the kids. The parents mush have been on something to not hear the baby cry at all.

That's what I think too. If my baby was crying I would get up to see about her. Maybe someone else can learn from their mistake.

Yes, this is definitely abuse. How could a parent sleep through their baby getting their toes gnawed off by a puppy. makes you wonder if they were under the influence. I am sorry but who would not hear their baby cry..i cannot even begin to say what should happen in this case...

I agree with you. Not only should they take a class to have an animal. I think people should have to take a class before having a baby. I don't think the puppy was being mean. He is a 6 week old baby, who wants to chew lie all puppies

Oh my...that is terrible. I agree they should be charged. I hope the judge throws the book at them. I would never own a pit bull either I know some people say they are safe but I have heard way to many stories and it is not worth taking.

Yes it is terrible. I think they totally neglected their baby. You would think out of one of the parents one of them would have gotten up to see what was going on. I respect your opinion about pit bulls, but I think they are just as safe to have as any other dog. There are always horror stories of dogs attacking people that are other breeds as well. As with any animal the owner needs to be more responsible. That's not saying a dog will never attack. That's a chance you take with owning any dog. Thanks for your comment.

That is an absolutely terrible story. I think the parent are to blame how could anyone not know what was happening they must have been stoned or drunk. If the puppy was trying to nurse then it must have been starving. Surely if the people had a puppy it was weaned. I expect the puppy will be euthanized, as obviously these people who dont how to watch over a baby and feed a puppy probably never had the puppy get it's shots.
