Has this happened to you after Christmas at Wal-Mart?

Have you ever went to return something and found that they have marked it down to half its original price the day after Christmas? Most of the things being returned are gifts and nearly all are without a reciept. Since you can't prove what was actually paid they keep the difference. I personally love shopping at Wal-Mart, this is one of my biggest problems with it. KEEP YOUR RECIEPTS EVERYONE!!!! Tell me what you think about this. Do they do it on purpose, or are they just trying to get rid of extra merchendise after Christmas?

They do it all the time. If you buy something and don't have the reciept when you return it, they give you back the price of the item then, not what you paid for it. They also mark down the stuff to get rid of it. They mark down stuff after every holiday, because they have so much left over. I hope that helps, I used to work at Walmart, and that's how I know that much.

My husband worked for Wal-Mart for 6 years when we moved to the South this wal-mart didn't care for their employees like the one he was at in cali so he found another job that pais twice what he was making. But you would be surprised what wal-mart trys to get away with...But will have to say this...Wal-mart also gets burned a lot by customers returning things. Like at the store in cali where my husband worked someone returned a tv and had retaped the box walmart doesn't open the boxes right away on returns when they did later it had books in it not the tv....Couple other times this happened as well. So no receipt take what ya get. Sometimes people leave the price tags on the clothes and they show full price but actually they got it at half off...but really wal-mart,k-mart,sear,jcPennys whom ever keep the reciepts

That is true.....Wal-Mart markets itself to have good values though, it would be hard to take everyone's word that they paid full price. Just wanted to tell everyone BEFORE CHRISTMAS so they won't have trouble after.

I think they are just trying to get rid of extra merchandise. I do agree with you on that though, if you don't have your receipt, you only get credit for the current price. I always get a gift receipt when I purchase a gift anywhere. It doesn't have the price on it, but if they need to return it, they can get the full price or exchange no problem. Also, did you know that if you buy something at Wal-Mart and it goes on sale within 2 weeks, you can take your receipt up there and get a refund of the difference.

I've had something on layby at target before, gone to pick it up and its gone down to half price. So I had to pay it all off and then they refund the difference after

Many stores do that though. It isn't just wallyworld. They know that shopping just after christmas is huge too so they have sales for that reason. To say that they absolutely don't realize that they are nickel and diming people though is probably foolish. It's no worse than the evils of some places gift cards that slowly leak value with oddball monthly charges or even some that have expiration dates.

Others stores may do it as well, but I have only experienced it at Wal-Mart.

I think they do it on purpose. Truth is, as you said hardly anyone has receipts. They make a killing then cause they only give you half and write it off as a loss or send it back for credit. Think about it...it truly is a smart call on their part.

They sort of have to though. Imagine the volume of items that are returned during that time of the year. They have to pay people to stock the items, handle the returns at customer service, then handle shipping back to warehousing, etc. The more they touch that item, the more their profit margins on it drop.

I work at Walmart, and hate every minute of it...but seriously, as long as you keep receipts and tell granny to get a gift receipt when she buys you slacks, then you'll be fine. This is what they do: After Christmas, they lower prices because: (1) You're all right, they want to trap you into losing money on the return...which doesn't make sense to me, I work in the connection center/electronics part and we can send just a picture back to the vendor and get credit back...we just say it's broken and unpackagable and that it would be of no use to them and they will give the credit. So not only do they jip you outta money, they get their credit back with the vendor. (2) The growth of giftcard sales has the retail market re-positioning their sale dates, they know you have the money on a giftcard, and if they mark merch down even twenty cents, you're more inclined to buy it. Walmart just has everyone figured out. Can't fault them for that. Just keep those receipts, and for pete's sake, return it to the original store you bought it from, it makes the process alot easier.

i am from the philippines and i don't know what wal-mart is. but i see your point. whenever i shop for things, i keep the receipts. since here, all malls have a 7-day return policy. you can return your goods within seven days from the date of purchase. ofcourse, they will check if the item is still in good condition. you need to present your receipt for verification. however, i haven't experienced what you've experienced... that when you return an item, you noticed it's been marked down. here, usually, you don't get your money back. but you get the same thing for an exchange. for clothes, you get the same thing but you can have the size changed if that's the customer's concern.

Yes I have noticed that happen, I always keep my reciepts, especially for walmart, and most other places too where the merchandise might need to be returned or exchanged for what ever reasons. I think they just do that to get rid of all of their merchandies, they are always getting new things so they have to get rid of the ones that have been sitting there for the past couple of weeks.

I wouldn't say they are doing it on purpose it is the same policy all year round. They clearly state what their return policys are.Like you stated keep your receipt and you can avoid this completely. I think it is awesome they will do a return without a recipet some stores won't let you return without a reciept since that is the proof you purchased it from them. I never return gifts anyway I think it is insulting to the person who gave it to you.

I don't see a need to keep something you wouldn't use.

I would assume that the severe reduction in cost is because they are less marketable after Christmas, so they are happy to recoup what they can from their initial outlay on the stock. I have not experienced the problem that you refer to, but then I have never had reason to return a gift. I can imagine what a problem this is, and I cannot think of any way to combat it apart from your suggestion of keeping receipts. Sadly, most people would discard receipts if the item is bought as a present.

They do that at a lot of the stores. My family gives out gift cards now, because we are so sick of returning stuff.

LOL!!! I have had that happen only I wasn't returning something. I went to see the sales after Christmas and found things I bought for my kids on sale for real cheap. So I would take my receipt back and get the difference. It does stink to have it half price after you just bought it and not get your money back.

And even if you get a gift receipt, the price originally paid isn't on that either. So if you're returning something you received, you're just SOL. Same thing happened with me and wedding gifts. We were having showers right in the middle of the swap from McRaes to Belk when Belk bought them out. So we registered for stuff, received it, and when we tried to take double back, we got very little money on gift cards to buy other things because everything was on clearance by then in order to bring in Belk's merchandise.

This happened to me last year for Christmas. I got my husband a coat for over $100. After Christmas I noticed it for $69. I was pissed. I could of saved myself a lot. I had my reciept, we took it back and got our money back and then 15 minutes later my husband went in and got the same coat for the cheaper price.

By the way, this was at Wal-Mart and we did get our full refund back for $100. If you have a reciept, they have to give you what you gave them. If we didn't have the reciept, we would of only got the $69 back.

This happened all the time here in Greece, but the Institute of Consumers have decided to stop it. They give the costumers the right to returnh the goods within 1 month after they are bought and in their original value.

I don't think they are doing it on purpose. Most of the time they will do it if it is a christmas item and not something they carry all year round. Most of the stored do it, so they are not the only one. It is not hard to save your recipts. I just take a zip loc and put them all in there with each recepit labeled as to what was bought at that store.
