Last year... the only places I went was to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina and to visit family in Ohio. So how bout I tell you about this year? In January my mom rented a cabin in Gattlinburg. There were 23 of us. My friend Chris...my extended family all went. We went to the shows that were open, shopping in Gattlinburg, and then my mom's uncle came from Tennessee and drove us up the mountains, over the border and into Cherokee country. The best thing this trip was the Smith Family show (until they got all patriotic). In July my boyfriend, his nephew and I flew to New York. We stayed with his mom on Shelter Island (off of long Island... you have to take a ferry to get there). We drove into the city and spent one whole day there. My favorite things were the Buddhist temple, this two story pizza place (I can't remember the name of it but I have the menu at home), a bar called Tonic, and the various parks with Hari Krishnas, artist, musicians, street performers, etc. We also went to time square, the WTC memorial (terrible)... Mauntak, and the Hamptons (not impressed). It was cool seeing the red jelly fish everywhere in the water off the island. In October my family went to South Beach (Miami) for two days before boarding our cruise to Key West and Mexico. South Beach is pretty but the money, the fashion, and the snobs can get to you. My boyfriend and I really liked this roof top bar at Tiffanys. There was a gay bar on Ocean Ave called the Palace that we liked a lot, and a gay club called Twist. We had more fun those places than anywhere else in South Beach. Key West is always great. I love it there. We were there during Fantasy Fest but we were there from 7 am until 1 pm. My uncle and his friends were there, so they met us and showed us a cool shop with masks for the masquerade ball that night. My mom dragged us down to a dirty section on the water that looks all decrepit. But the bar was pretty neat and uncrowded. We went to the Hogshead too for Tequila shots. I like the chickens that run all over the place. When we stopped in Mexico we went to the Mayan ruins of Tulum... they were pretty... but not a lot to do...and the living conditions of the locals is sad. We had the most fun in the little tourist trap by the water drinking Dos Equis and Coronas while we waited to get back on the boat. I just got back from Seattle. I loved it there. IT's such a huge interesting city - but there is still nature everywhere. Mountains and Palm trees. The best places were the Belleview Lush store, the Space Needle, the Old Spaghetti Factory, James Pass in the Cascade Mountains, the open market (where they throw fish), Taco Del Mar, Freeway Park (it's a big pretty park right over 5 lanes of free way), and The New Orleans Jazz Bar in Pioneer Square. I usually only do one vacation a year. My mom paid Tennessee...I paid for the cruise...and my boyfriend travels for work so I used Skymiles to go to NYC and Seattle. I noticed you live in GA... have you ever been to Helen? We went there about five years ago for my boyfriends family reunion. It was summer and beautiful outside. We went for a random drive in the mountains into one of the Carolinas and bought fresh sweetcorn and tomatoes...and we found cool folk art, soap shops, etc at random places in the mountains. Floating down the Chatahoochie in a tube was a lot of fun.
