How do you keep nailpolish on your fingernails?
seems everytime i paint my nails which are soft and bendy, the nailpolish wears off of the ends of the nails or chips off really easy, sometimes the whole bit of nailpolish peels off completely, if i file my nails there is a weird smell and my nails are thin already, i dont want to file them. is there anything i can do? i dontu se basecoat or topcoat and my nailpolish brands vary from expensive to cheap

Generally, I find that my nail polish lasts for about 3 days before they start to chip. I use somewhat cheaper brands. I use clear nail polish as a base because the nail polish colors I wear a dark. If I didn't put on clear nail polish first, my nails would be stained when I remove the nail polish.
You're nails are soft, bendy and thin? It sounds like your nails aren't very strong and maybe you shouldn't even wear nail polish at this time. Make sure you're eating a healthy diet, and if I would suggest you take a multivitamin, and an additional B-complex supplement with Biotin. It will take a few weeks, but by the time your nails grow out, they should be thicker and hard.

I use Bobbie Nail Polish and I think this stays longer on my nails. Other cheaper brands chip off easily. Actually you can't really keep nail polish for long. Even if it does not chip off, the luster wears off so you really have to change them every now and then.
So as for me, I actually change my nail polish every week.
