How important is it for children to know how to swim? At what age should they learn?

children swimming - children swimming
Yes it's very important. I think at age 4 they are olde enough to be enrolled in swimming lessons but it is also helpful if they are introduced to the swimming pool or sea when they are still infants like 6 months.

I totally agree. All my children take lessons every summer. I started the summer one of my children just jumped into a swimming pool! Luckily family members were in the pool and pulled him out, but guess what? HE JUMPED RIGHT BACK IN! I knew then it was time.

mom and baby - this is a perfect example of a mom teaching her child how to swim, or at least not be afraid of the water. you dont want to develope a phobia.
Yes, it is important. Not just because i lov eswimming either. it can be a great saftey measure if you know your child knows how to swim. i was in the water before i could walk. and if you know how to swim, i dont think swimming lessons are necessary. my mom taught me. once your child is old enough to go on vacations where they are near the watre, they should have at least been introduced to it!

I also think it is very important that kids be taught, somehow, how to swim...whether that br through lessons or family or self-taught, because this is one skill that is I believe is quite likely to come in need sometime in life.

My mother knew swimming. My learnt swimming from her father when she was 12. I cannot swim because I am hydrophobic. My wife took my son for swimming and he learnt only basics and said good bye. I feel swimming, driving and cycling, typing are 3 important thing which can help at one stage o r the other.

For me it is important for the kid to know how to swim because when they grow old they will love it. And at the age of 4 maybe thats the right time for them to start swimming.

As young as they can start to learn. However, you may need to have him medically certified first. I started swimming when I was 5 yrs old.

Yes I do if they know how to swim they are less likely to drown. It is very important to become strong swimmers.
