Status symbols – What do they symbolize really ?

Now-a-days , all things have become status symbols – be it your cell phone, your accessories, your car, your clothes, your shoes… But how does having the latest hottest cell phone make you , as a person, differ from someone who loves his old set ? I really don’t know why people make such a big fuss over having the most latest (or rather expensive) stuff ?? I mean, if I have a sexy new phone.. (And I do) I flaunt it too – but it’s only because of people’s mindset…what they think ! I hate to admit but it matters to me too.. though it really shouldn’t. Call it our society/ peer pressure .. but these things do matter ! So, tell me how important are such status symbols in your society and do they really matter to you ? Should this be the case ? What are you views ?

For me personally, I have never been a fan of such things. I am more likely to laugh at someone who just dropped a grand on a new phone than to envy them. My phone is about six months old and was free from my cell provider when I renewed m contract. It makes calls, it answers calls. I don't need it to do anything else. It also has a camera, but I never use it. That's what I have a digital camera for.

The biggest pressure status symbols society is Europe. I see that India and Korea is just the same. In USA seems to be different. It is more practical here. I get my cell phone for my cell phone provider for almost nothing. It has camera in but I do not use it. I do not care much about gadgets and none of my friends do.

Status symbols are there in every society. But we should identify them as such and should not get disturbed by better things which others have. If we really know who we are, I think we would be less worried about others. We have to develop our self worth so that outside things do not really matter to us. It may be the spiritual development we can call!

I think the thing which is necessity is the luxuries things for others. So, it is difficult to say which is status symbol and which is not...

Tricolour - Tricolour flag of india
Everey society has status symbols. In india kings used to have it and later even the Hindu religious leaders began to have it. Even today they display their status symbol for people to know that they have a great following. Our politicians, cinma stars, high society people, display their status symbol in very many ways. The latest craze with politicians is having elite commondos trail them where ever they go. Greater the number of these commondos more important is the vip.

This is happening also in our society.. having the latest means that you belong in the upper class.. having the older one's makes you in the lower class.. having none at all means you are an outcast in the community.. but as for me, i don't care at all what people think of me.. i'm not rich but i do have a car and the latest cell phone.. but i don't have the habit of flaunting it.. i feel good just being myself and acting in a low profile manner...

here in north india, its a big craze to have the latest to mark you status presence. its sad that status is merely related to teh financial aspect and not the good soul .

I don't beleive in staus symbols. My motto in life is simple living, high thinking. I don't believe in living to please others , show off. I am not that sort of the person. iam a very simple person who leads a very simple lifestyle. I mean i buy things like cellphone to call people only when essential to keep in touch with family and friends, and to order for various services like order something from store, inquire about deficiency in serivice if my cable is not working, i can't watch my television and won't be able to watch news coverage and entertainment programmes. Then to pay my cable and internet bills... and so on and so forth. The bottomline is i don't beleive in peer pressure and what others say i buy and dod things to meet my basic essentila requirements. because it is my life and so only i can take decisions about my life and no body else.

My children want all the best things, name brands etc. Sometimes I think they are wasting money, but I don't say that to them. They earn their own money. It must be status.

I dont have fantasy on such things... I think you need to get your things (be it cell phone or whatever) to suit your needs..... I need to travel a lot for my job so I got a phone with an FM radio.... This is not for status but to make me fell ok (rather entertain me) ... True frnds and family dont look for status to move with you .. they seek ur love.. so why bother :)
