I have breast cancer and will be starting herceptin soon. I would like some info from anyone who has already undergone this treatment. I've gotten info from doctors, but am interested in first-hand experiences, please. Will be starting radiation later.

I have been on Herceptin for a little over a year now. When I started chemo, I was on Adriamycin and Cytoxin for 4 treatments each. Then I was on Taxol for 4 treatments, and while I was on Taxol, I was also on Herceptin for 8 weekly treatments. After the weekly treatments, I started Herceptin every 3 weeks. For me the Herceptin is by far the easiest on the body system out of the 4 I have been on. I haven't noticed any side effects since being on Herceptin alone. That doesn't mean there are no side effects, only that if there were any side effects, either they were mild compared to the other 3 chemo treatments I took, or I was already used to the chemo and side effects that I just never noticed any side effects from the Herceptin. All 4 chemo treatments I took were through I.V., so I don't know about any side effects of anything that might be taken orally. I do wish you good luck with your chemo, and I hope everything goes well for you and your family. I know it's hard, and it will probably get harder before it gets easier. But stick with the treatment, even when it makes you feel sick with nausea, and don't forget to keep eating right. That is very important. You will probably lose weight while on chemo, and that is normal. My weight has gone up and down between 159 and 186 pounds while I have been on chemo. Sorry if I went off topic a bit.

Thank you so much for this info! It's very helpful! I've talked more to my oncologist, and she was saying that I'd also do 4 treatments each of Adriamycin and Cytoxin (supposed to start it tomorrow), and then she wasn't sure if she'd follow with a year of Herceptin (every 3 weeks) or not. She said she hasn't decided on that part. THEN, I got a phone call yesterday from one of her nurses, saying that she thought I would be a good candidate for a clinical trial. Ideas??? Were you part of any trials? I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed.

Hi Jeepstergirl, I've had 12 doses (3 weekly) of Herceptin so far, and have had no problems with it at all. I've just carried on as normal, with no side-effecs. And my heart function's stayed the same throughout. I hope it treats you kindly, and good luck with your treatment!
