Praying at the Dinner Table

Do you and your family pray at the supper table, if so, for what meals and what kind of prayer is said? Do you do it on special occasions like Christmas? Or maybe not at all? Has this been a tradition in your family or is it something you've started yourself and hope to pass on?

Not at all. Nothing fails like prayer. I enjoy the rewards of my own work. Talking into the air with ones eyes closed does not add flavor to the food, nor does it add any other benefits.

As Pagans we try to always be aware of where our food has come from, so we personally and silently say a thank you to the good earth and to the lives of any animals that may have contributed to our meal. We try not to take food for granted and not be wasteful, so giving thanks every single time we eat is very important to us. Its rarely a spoken group prayer though, more of a private moment of reflection.

I pray before i eat my meal. we have to thank God for the blessings that we received specially having food at the table. many people nowadays cant even afford to buy food to eat. so we have to be thankful and pray before we eat our meal. but i also pray and thank God for everything.

My family doesn't say any prayer at the table. And if they did, I wouldn't be eating dinner with them anymore. I refuse to be in the same dinner table and have to be put through religious nonsense.

We pray daily. While we can sometimes be rushed and forget at a meal, we try hard not to. We have so much to be thankful for.

My extended family pretty much only says grace on special occasions -- Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. My husband and I, however, say grace before every meal. Doesn't matter if we're eating leftovers at home or out in a restaurant. I think it's important to remember to thank God for what we have.

I think we should always pray at dinner table we should be thankful for the meals that received everyday,if there are some people who occassionally pray, I think it's their practice at home.

I grew up in a Christian home where we prayed before every meal. We all sat at the table together and no one ate until everyone was seated and the blessing was said. Kinda like "the Waltons". With today's busy lifestyle most of our meals are eaten individually so we each pray over our own meals. On those occasions where we are all together, my husband prays. When we go out to a restaurant he also prays before we eat. There is no certain prayer that is prayed. We just ask God to bless the food and for his blessings and protection to be upon those we love.

oh yes, it's been customary for my family to prayer before meals. but i'd like us, too, to say a prayer of thanks after meals, but we keep forgetting to do that. lol. it would be a nice custom to keep, wouldn't you agree?

When we are with our families, a prayer is always said before, and sometimes after, the meal. But on our own, my husband and I just haven't gotten there yet. Maybe when our daughter is older.

Unfortunately, busy schedules don't allow me and the family to eat together. But I try to pray everytime I eat. Even if it is a simple thanks to God for blessing me with the food. I just think it's the right and proper thing to do.

We pray before we eat, anytime and anywhere, to give thanks to God and ask for blessings and forgiveness for all the sins that we have done. Praying is a means to communicate with God and God commands "Pray unceasingly" (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Praying for us started when we became Christians. For me, I was baptized into Christ on October 1, 1989. From then I became a member of the Church of Christ and a Christian.
