He was born in the summer of his twenty seventh year coming home to a place he'd never been before he left yeaterday behind him you might say he was born again might say he found a key for ev'ry door When he first came to they mountains his life was far away on the road and hangin' by a song but the strings already broken and he doesn't really care it keeps changin' fast and it don't last for long. But the Colorado Rocky mountain high I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky the shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullaby. Ok to me this means that the person is starting a new life. Thier old life has worn them down and they need to get back to very nature of themself. They have to discover that person deep within themself. What do you think?

it's about flying into the side of a mountain because you are tired of singing this song every single night on stage

Ok I see what you are referring to but he wrote this song long before he took his lightweight plane into the mountain side. I hate lightweight planes they are dangerous.

well I was kidding. Actually one of his songs was the song my wife and I played at our wedding for our first dance... Lady, are you crying, do the tears belong to me Did you think our time together was all gone Lady, you've been dreaming, I'm as close as I can be And I swear to you our time has just begun Close your eyes and rest your weary mind I promise I will stay right here beside you Today our lives were joined, became entwined I wish that you could know how much I love you Lady, are you happy, do you feel the way I do Are there meanings that you've never seen before Lady, my sweet lady, I just can't believe it's true And it's like I've never, ever loved before (Chorus) Lady, are you crying, do the tears belong to me Did you think our time together was all gone Lady, my sweet lady, I'm as close as I can be And I swear to you our time has just begun

My husband I both love his songs. I believe this song refers to finding another place to live that feels like home after some disaster takes place. In this case it is the mountains.

Great answer! Each answer is as individual as each person who writes it. Music speaks to us in many different ways. I love John Denver's music too. Have a great day!

I think this was written to be only understood by the writer, however my view about this is that it seems the writer has started a new life because he lost his memory of his childhood up until he was 26 or 27. By elaborating on this but I'm just kind of making it up as I go along. When he came to Colorado where the mountains, are he began life anew because he didn't remember life before this. Because life is changing so fast and he is not feeling pain from his past (raining fire in the sky and the starlight is softer than a lullaby) he is content with his life right now and not concerned about what he doesn't remember. Well, anyway I never really saw the words written out and never gave a thought to what it may have meant, and I've heard and liked this song for years, so thanks for sharing your ideas and allowing me to share mine.
