Cordless phones are generally to replace a 'landline' phone that connects through the wall. They don't travel far since they're connecting to a 'base' which is plugged into the wall rather than a 50 foot tower somewhere.
Usually having a landline is alot cheaper than a mobile phone as the calls don't cost as less, neither is there usually higher prices of people on different phone-line suppliers.
