Do you suffer from Foot-In-Mouth Disease?

Have you ever said something in all innocence before instantly regretting it? I seem to have a constant killer case of Foot-In-Mouth. The worst one I can think of is when I was talking to one of my friends, and another friend (who is quite overweight) was half-listening. My friend was talking about her mothers' weight, and I made a comment. When my other friends ears perked at the comment on excess weight, I turned and said 'Oh I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about overweight people in general'. Wow. Stupidest thing to say ever! What about you?

Recently my mom and my stepfather were talking about getting some exercise equipment beyond the free weights, etc., that they already have. They were discussing some of the stationary machines and I blurt out "hey, you should get a treadmill!" because it's my favourite machine at the gym. Well, my stepfather is in a wheelchair...at least he took it graciously, saying something like "oh yeah, that would be some workout for me...what, I hang onto the handrails and just freewheel?"

I think at one time or another we all do. We speak before we think. It's just a human response to any given situation. Pulling our foot out of our mouth successfully is the problem after that.

i think, more or less, we all do. its hard to deal with tongues. once it's out of it and it's gone forever, we can't undo it. my mom repeatedly ask me to think before i utter, but mostly it has been the other way round. i feel sorry for myself and at times i think like killing myself for being so stupid!!

Haha, I know what you mean. We should listen to our parents more often, and save ourselves the embarrassment once in a while. Thanks for the reply!

Yes I suffer from it too. I tend to be very bold and speak too quickly before thinking. I can't say I have offended people but I have let the cat out of the bag many times.

I know what you mean. I tend to say what I'm thinking at times without thinking through the consequences of my saying that. It's gotten me into trouble more than a few times, particularly in my work.

Its sometimes very unfortunate that our words flow out without realizing its consequenses, whether it would be hurting for others... But its better to avoid speaking again and again about such a thing, so that we can divert the topic and handle the situation in a better manner! I am good in diverting the minds of the one listening to my speech and I also would be careful that I never use a sentence or a word which would be hurting others..

I have had this problem. What makes it so bad for me is that I will tell myself beforehand, "Now, be sure you don't say xyz." And I would blurt it out anyway. The one thing I didn't want to say would just jump out of my mouth the minute I saw this person. Sheesh! I don't have the problem so much anymore since I learned to just be quiet. But, I think the silence makes other people say stupid things...lol. I will stand there not saying anything, and I think the person becomes uncomfortable with the silence and will rush to fill the void. Then out comes some silly thing that makes them turn red.

Sometimes we just need to a little more careful on what we say. You never know who is right around the corner.

I dont think too much about a person who is always on the wrong side of my THINKING PROCESS. One cannot avoid such people , hence it is always better to ignore such people. Whereever and Whenever it is not possible to avoid such people, learn to not give responses. This will not spoil your peace of mind.

You mean a Freudian slip. A lot of people do that. Stupidest thing I ever said was "I love you" to some man who did not love me back. I felt like a loser.

Sort of. I alaways feel sorry for saying something bad to my friends, you know sometime you can't control yourself. My mum told me when you are angry, remember that don't talk just leave yourself alone or go home.

Not talking about foot and mouth disease, silly, I'm talking about foot IN mouth, where you say something silly without thinking and immediately regret what you said.

LOL, I have a very embarassing story...that im going to regret telling, ...how ironic o well. Bascily a few years ago, I was learning German in school. We were learning the alphabet by going round the class and saying a letter in German. I had counted ahead and worked out I had to say the letter 'g', which in german is pronounced 'gay'. But when it got to my turn I reaslised I had counted wrong, and blurted out "but I thought I was gay". The whole class started laughing and I just sunk lower into my chair. lol....at least I can look back on it and laugh..

shhhh - shhhh
It happens kaorin, In general normally almost to the maximum extent of people will be having the same curisoty to hear what the others are saying and will be willing to interfere between others and in a mix of all these situations definetly the confusion arises from which the trouble arises.

Oh yeah but in my case I actually did mean what I said. I know of someone who doesn't work, all of her kids are in school, she has a maid and all she does is call into radio shows to win contests and she DOES win all kinds of trips, she has won 2 cars and money! And her husband makes a lot of money! And she is a very inconsiderate and selfish person .. one time I said "wow I wonder whats it's like to be spoiled rotten with a horseshoe up your a**".

I just had a bad case of this tonight when I made a comment at my son's birthday party about my sister's mother-in-law being bossy. The conversation was centered on who was more bossy, my sister or myself. Anywhoo, her husband didn't appreciate my comment and as soon as it left my mouth I wish I could've had it back. I love my brother-in-law a lot and I hate myself for making him mad.
