Self Mutilation: Why Do people cut themselves with sharp objects?

I never understood why people attempt to bring pain to their bodies by cutting themselves with sharp objects like razors, glass. I heard it is suppose to relieve the pain they are feeling inside. Do any of you understand this method. Have you ever tried or know anyone that does this? Do the person be trying to commit suicide?

i have self harmed for about 4years and although i have tried my hardest to stop its not as easy as you think! I never do this to kill myself although i have onced tried to overdose but was found in time by my boyfriend! Selfharm is a way of coping i would get really wound up to the point where im shaking uncontrollably but as soon as i see the blood i feel in control of my life and i immediatly feel calm, although after about 10minutes i regret what i have done, although there is no-one to talk to, self harm is the thing that will kill me. Please dont get yourself in a position of selfharming it will take over your life.
