I have about 40 chickens right now, a mix of Isa Browns, Plymouth Rocks, and Black Australorps. Oh, and I also have 2 Phoenix - a hen and a rooster, the rooster is my favorite of all my chickens, he's so pretty! I raise them for eggs and meat(but I can't actually butcher them myself, can't kill something I've fed I guess). The eggs are getting few and far between right now tho, too cold for them. I love to sit on the porch swing in the summer and just watch the chickens peck around in the yard.

You are well into the swing of having chickens twistedvanilla and they make our miserable 6 awfully lonely. LOL Actually ours are for the eggs only and once they stop laying they become food for the pets. Actually it is one of those things where in the summer we do not need that many but in the winter it is an advantage because at least we still get at least 2 eggs/day, but often 3 or 4. However in the summer there are 6 eggs every day, which we do not need, so tend to give the excess away to friends. At least with our son home now we do use a few more eggs, because I often make him a couple of bacon and eggs sandwiches before he goes off to work. Also can use them in salads and all sorts of things, but when there is just my husband and myself we would be lucky to use half a dozen in a week. When our son was young, and we had the farm, we always had some lambs but they were for our own consumption, despite the fact that we reared. Actually what we would do would be to take them to the butcher, who would kill, hang and cut the meat up for us but he never actually returned our own sheep. Anyway, our son learnt very young what they were for so he named them "lamb chops" and "mutton". LOL

Sometimes the weather does play havoc with the animals, and with the extremes you have (or at least they are extremes to me), it would be much worse. Good luck and I do hope that you start to get more eggs, and lose no more hens twistedvanilla. :)
