As a collage teacher, I'm deeply frustrated by the problem: Am I a successful teacher if I am not be given a senior professional title, even though I do my best to do my teaching job and have been accepted well by my students? I find a lot of teachers only concentrate on writing research papers but ignore their daily teaching job just because the evaluation of professional titles focuses on their research work result. More and more papers should be published which need our lot of time, money and energy, (You know senior professional title will be awarded high wages.) but good teaching results also need time, energy, patience and more responsibility. How can I balance them? If no senior professional title, am I a successful teacher?

A teacher is a person who passes his knowledge to the children teaching isnt all about money its about how much does the class absorb from you If its all about research work and promotion do you think those teachers would be successful Yes they might be, but in moral values if you ask any kid about such teachers they would just say, She taught me nothing! You know the actual values and meaning of teacher You know it isnt all about promotions and research Then why is it that you feel down about it You are doing your job and thats all what matters

It should not matter what your title is to be successful. If your students accept you and they do all the work you give them and they do well then that tells me that you are a successful teacher. Do not worry if you do not have a higher title or not. The only thing that would matter to me is if the students were learning what I taught them and doing well on their tests and papers and used that information well after graduating. That is what I consider a successful teacher. You can't please everyone no matter how hard you work or try.

Thank you for your opinion. Your idea of successful teacher is what I try to do and eager to do. I also agree with you that” You can't please everyone no matter how hard you work or try". But there is a question: I get fewer awards from just teaching than from higher professional title, and that's a loss in money. You know, money is a scale for a success. What should I do?

or... somebody could say that you are a successful teacher if you have results like your students have good notes on a tournament (olimpic etc.).

If you are teaching your students, that should be your mark of success. Are they learning what you want them to? Here in the US we have the same problem with teachers who fail in the classroom but are highly thought of by administrators because they talk a good story and do professional development activities. Actually, the best teachers don't have time for all this stuff, because they're too busy teaching. If you think you're doing a good job, then it doesn't matter what your title is.

Really? It seems to be a worldwide problem. Thank you for telling me that. I even blamed that on my administrators.

Well I would think teaching should be combined with or integrated into researching. Collage students should gain the ability for research in their later careers, so teachers should teach them how to face such problems, let them know the frontiers in related scopes. From Chinese tradition and the ways most professors are doing the europe and usa, teachers should focus on teaching, or lecturing! Especially for graduates, such lectures should introduce the advances of the subjects. The worst thing in China now is writing books! Many books now are not serious compilation of your research, your thinking, but just some piles of materials, or even copies from other sources. I got a friend in east china nornal uni., also a teacher, now seems she doesnt always write.

"Many books now are not serious compilation of your research, your thinking, but just some piles of materials, or even copies from other sources."i agree with you, that's not good! You should keep your principles and your sense of self-worth,in case of peer pressure, just say NO!

It depends on your own value towards your career. For me the genuine value of your profession makes you a successful one instead of those certificates or qualifications. It's just like a student, who know how to score A in the exam, but could hardly apply what he learned in the real world, is worthless and to me, he is not a successful one. I think, a successful teacher should be a teacher who is highly recognized by his/her students and the parents. Who not only educate the students but also cultivate the right attitude among the students, who could bring hope and future to them. Ofcoz i do not mean you shoul not pursue your carrier growth, but you should consider it a bonus and a officially recognization. Eg if i am doing bad in maths, but my teacher is giving a A+ to me, i will feel ashame. But if i do well in maths, and the teacher give me a A+, then i feel myself deserve it and feel proud too. So, your first priority should be concentrating on how to become a genuine good teacher then only you pursue the official recognition. It will be sweet :)

I am on the opposite side of you. I am a scienctist doing research at a higher education institution and I have to teach as part of my duty. For me the two goes hand in hand, to teach you need also research, to do research you also need to teach. At my institution there is a no-research culture, but because of the goverment funding formula the sintitution is forced to also participate and grow their research culture. I feel that there should be room for both, pure teachers and researchers.

I agree with you,” there should be room for both, pure teachers and researchers. " What they'd like to do should depend on their will instead of being forced to do. So the administrative unit should organize it from human nature, don’t you think so? By the way, would you like to be my friend?

I would tell you that there are 2 aspects in the science. First is to know, second is to teach the others. I think that one that write a lot of papers help the community in its own way. You need information that was written in books. You need the TOOLS created by the others. Also, remember that if one think that he knows everything he would try to teach the others (but that will stop him from learning by himself). "You cannot put more tea in a glass that is already full". Think about that.

You're an expert, I think. You've given out the difference between Teaching and Researching. Sometimes they are well related if we know how to balance them, but sometimes we will feel annoyed for lacking of time. Thanks for your alert.

Respectable madam, there is one way to find out! Why dont you test your students, if they do well, then surely you are a great teacher, if not! then they have to be motivated to work harder.

Good idea! I'll give them a questionnaire to see if what I do is welcomed by my students. But from my colleague’s reflection (They got it from my students), my students think me as a responsible teacher.

Teaching job is a very respectful profession that anybody could have.Teachers are next to god and they are respected by students always. First make it clear, what has prompted you to become teacher? Is it 1. money and status? or 2.passion for teaching? If it is passion for teaching then you are successful teacher. Your students are happy with your teaching. They are happy because you have been able make things clear in their minds. If it is money then you may have to follow a bit of what other teachers do to get the said title write thesis and research papers. There may be qualifications required for awarding the title. If a teacher is able to get love and respect of his/her students then he is a nation's asset. Teacher plays most important part in making good citizens of a country. You are a good teacher no wonder!! Be proud of your self.

Thank you for your response. I like to be a teacher first out of passion, my father is a teacher who influenced me a lot, he always told me to be serious of my teaching, and said that's an interesting job in the world because we can get together with youngsters each day and sense the feeling to be needed. I like this kind of feeling, and as you know the profession of teacher can't earn more in each country. I just don't want to fall behind of my colleague.

I think to be a good teacher its nothing to do with the title as we might have a very good teachers whom were without any title like those who teach in primary and secondary schools. They put so much efforts in their teaching life, they cares and been so patience to their students in hope that all their students will truly learns somethings from him/her. The responsiblities and the love they give to the young generations were so much...one might not have a senior professinoal title with him/her in his/her teaching life but am sure the efforts they putting in will gain them most values things in life......RESPECT!! from the students, parents and the society.

This is a hard question, because you teach for college and not high school or below. In college, students still need a competent teacher to guide and challenge them, but at their level of study, they also require teachers to be pushing the boudaries and developing new theories for them to discuss and learn from. Some of the best professors I ever had were also the most published. It is because they had such deep knowledge of the subject they were teaching and had put it into writing. Writing is a very versatile process which requires you to examine information for many angles and make judgements on the best way to convey your meaning to other people. This process is very similar to the process of teaching, except that teachers require one more critical skill which is to be able to listen and actually hear your students. What I am trying to say is that allow it may be hard, you need to balance both energy spent towards teaching, because I think that performing research can help you grow as a teacher and being a teacher can strike new theories for papers. However, I do commend you for focusing so much on your students at the expense of your personal gain. That is a quality that makes a good and dedicated teacher. There are many teachers who do neglect their primary job, teaching. Yet I think that your highest level of success will come when you are able to manage both competently.

Only some teachers are concentrate on research papers. But the true teacher will always try to guide the student. Be professional as a teacher. Learn new things elobarately before telling to the students. Generally studens expects morethan subject knowledge from the teacher.
