How do you find friends on mylots?

I see an avatar that's interesting and click on it. Then I look at their age, their interests and many times what kind of discussions they start and then I'll ask to be approved as their friend. Once, I had looked at the age, looked at the interests, looked at the discussions, and almost clicked on the friend button when I saw something buried really far down in things they like to do. It was something I consider quite personal, inappropriate and totally shocked me that this person would put it out for everyone to see. I thought eeeoooouuuh! and got off. How do you do it? and does it matter to you? or do you just want a lot of friends in your section?
