June 19, 2006 8:34am CST
I bought an craftsman 8 hp tractor last summer( used). after a few starts, the battery goes dead. I got the battery tested and it checks good. What would cause the battery to not stay charged? Model # 969730. Thanks in advance..Don

Try copying and pasting the link, for some reason the word at is being included in the link. And yes, you very well could have bad connections or grounds. Also, a short in the system could be causing a problem. Look for bad cables (worn, frayed, etc). Best of luck.

Couple of things to look at. First is the alternator. If the alternator is out it will not recharge the battery. There are simple tests that can be done to look at it. Try connecting a voltmeter to the alternator output to make sure you have amps coming out. You can also take the alternator to most parts stores and they can test it for you. If that works then check all the cables for wear and good connections. The other thing that it could be is a load on the system that drains the battery while it is sitting. Take a look at the link below. It gives you pretty good instructions on how to test your system. If these ideas don't work let me know and there are more complex things you can look at. http://www.exide.com/products/trans/na/battery_care/electrical_parasitic_load.pdf
