Overtired Babies... What can I do?

Help! My seven month old son is OVERTIRED, hes not hungry, hes not dirty, hes just tired...but he won't go to sleep. I try to do control crying but he just makes himself more and more hysterical. I'm terrified he'll stop breathing. He wont be nursed/rocked to sleep, hes just being a pain... I know it isnt his fault though, has anyone got any good advice?

My daughter is the same way too, but I just put her in her cribe. Let her cry for 30 mintues and if she's still crying after that, then I'll go in and hold her for few minutes and do it all over again. Now, when she's tired and put her on her cribe, she'll cry for few minutes and ten go straight to sleep. It took awhile because I just hated it when she cries and I can't do anything to comfort her, but my husband was there to tell me that I needed to do that and she'll never go to sleep when she's tired on her own. I listened and it worked.
