Should I declaw my cat?

Does declawing mean trimming your cat's nails. I think it's ok. My boyfriend snips his cat's nails every now and then. If he doesn't, the cat hurts him a lot when they play and damage some of their furnitures. And I think it's hygienic to do it too.
