What makes a good teacher?

I've just very recently tried my hand at teaching. I teach a post-graduate course at a local university. Most of my students a re professionals already, and study part-time only. Being new at this profession, it would be great to hear from everyone on what they think makes a great teacher. Who's the best teacher you've ever had and what's your best memory of that teacher? How did that person affect your life? Tips and ideas on how to be a good teacher would be appreciated...

I think a good teacher is someone who wants to work with the kids, and isn't in teaching to make a fast buck. Someone who is open and honest with their students, but knows to be professional.

thanks for your comments.. teachers who've impressed me in the past are those teachers whom you just know have a deep understanding of what they're teaching, and the ability to share that understanding to their students. i've never liked teachers who talked over our heads, who are more concerned about letting it be known to everybody that they have MBAs or PhDs, without even pausing for a moment to see if his audience, the students, actually get what he's saying.

I am fresh out of college and a first year teacher, so I am anticipating responses to this topic!!! My favorite teacher in college was my world civ professor who made everything a show. He dressed up for class and we acted out a lot of stuff. It was so interesting and I really did learn alot. Another favorite teacher was a british lit teacher in sr. college who could speak Old English. He was so intriguing! He always immediately captured my attention everytime I walked in class, but it think it was just because his vast amount of knowledge completely amazed me!

A good teacher is a friend to everybody and whom loved and respected by his/her students. He/she has the ability to come into the minds of his/her students just a parent do. He/she is of course strict as far as justification is concerned.

A good theacher for me is a good motivator, He/She must not assume students are as briliant as he/she is. Like my professor in college, she is not as brilliant like the authors of our calculus books, but she always insist to us that we are students and its is normal for us to commit mistakes and failed our subjects but if we put our very best and we still failed.. it is no longer our fault.. she even show us her TOR and point out her 3 consecutives failing grades in a particular subject. But she persisted and succeeded an average grade. But the point there is her classmates passed b'coz they paid the professor. She told us dignity is worth more than the highest grade a professor can give and it is priceless to pass a subject at your own hardwork.
