Why Is Christmas So Depressing?

Christmas is supposed to be the happiest time of the year for people who celebrate it. So why isn't it? Many people experience seasonal depression around the holidays, and find the whole time of the year a trial rather than a good time. Why does this happen, and what can we do about it? Does anyone have advice on how to reach out to people who aren't having a merry christmas?

I know that there are a lot of homeless people and families out there every year. I am thinking about taking my children and volunteering our time to the christmas toy drive and the soup kitchen next Christmas. While I still want to make Christmas memorable for the children with their presents and everything, I want them to be able to see that not everyone is fortunate like them. While we do not have the money for the best of things or even half of the stuff that they would like for Christmas, I think it would help them appreciate it more and if by us volunteering, it puts a smile on one other persons face, it will be worth it. People have to start remembering that Christmas is about family, friends and traditions, not about presents (who got what, who wants what) and doing better than everyone else. Everyone needs to feel appreciated at some time, and Christmas is a great time for that. Visit hospitals where there are children or elderly people in them becuase they both believe in the miracle of Christmas. Visit soup kitchens and help hand out warm meals to people with bigger problems than yours. Take a step back and realize that your life, while it might be imperfect and depressing, is better than a lot of people out there who have too much pride to ask for help. As long as we are able to help, we should all help out.

Christmas is only depressing if you are alone during the holidays. Exactly because you can see how good a time the rest of world are having.
