Invisible Friends

My 13 year old son carries on multiple conversations, as if he has several friends over. When he was young this was cute, but now I am wondering if he should have outgrown this behavior by now, and perhaps have him checked out mentally.
Does anyone remember how old they were when they gave up their invisible friends?
