The US legal system is really stupid sometimes.

I heard this report on the news last night and it caught my attention since I grew up in Chicago.

This woman abandoned her small son at the Taste of Chicago last summer. The Taste is a huge festival. When I went in highschool there were hundreds of thousands of people crammed into the park. I can't imagine even taking my kids to the Taste, let alone leaving one there. She did it on purpose because she couldn't deal with him anymore.
What did she get for her crime? Probation and time served! For abandoning her child in a huge crowd of people. She has been in jail ever since, unable to make bail and that is all she will get. Most likely she will get her kid back too because DCFS (Dept. of Children and Family Services) in Chicago sucks too.
What was the judge thinking? What do you think of this case?

Well I personally don't watch the news it depresses me. I do think I remember the story though. I am like you & would never take my kids to the taste. They miss out on a lot because I am terrified to have them around a million people. Heck there are days when I can't deal with the kids, I send them off to grandmas. Abandoning your kid when times get hard is just not acceptable to me. I am sure thar DCFS will place the kid back with the mom. As a kid I would not want to go back to my mom knowing she did. The judge needs to be slapped for his ruling too.

I hadn't heard of the case until I was watching WGN news last night (just for the heck of it). I was appalled at the outcome. How could they just slap her on the wrist for abandoning her child like that. There is so much that could have happened to him.
I don't like crowds so I have almost no interest in going to the Taste. I went twice. Once in high school and once with my parents when I was home from college. We went on the 3rd of July for the fireworks. The crowds were insane, the people were all rude and fighting and the cops couldn't do anything about it. I left the second time without even seeing the fireworks. It wasn't worth it. I would never take my kids down there. There are just too many people and I have too many kids to keep track of. It would be so easy for them to get lost in the crowds on accident.

I don't think that the ruling is normal in the US. Most times the judges are much harsher but since this woman had no criminal background they let her off easy. She has been in jail for about 6 months now because she couldn't afford the bail. I think she got off way to easy considering she abandoned her child. She didn't lose him. She took him there and then just walked away from him so she wouldn't have to deal with him anymore. It is crazy.
