Cell Phones

Am I the only person in the whole world who desn't own a cell phone? It seems to me that some people aren't carrying them out of necessity but because everyone else has one so they feel it's an absolute must to keep up with the Jones's. Am I wrong?

I have a cellphone, but only because with the plan I have it is much cheaper to pay for than paying a really high long distance bill. I admit I am a Mama's girl and love talking to my Mom (who lives on the west coast, me in Kentucky) and will call my Mom just about any chance I get. Sometimes I call everyday during the weekend and sometimes more than that. You can just about imagine how high my phone bill was before getting a cellphone.

Maybe one day I'll get one but right now I don't think so. And I'm mommas boy. I hate to admit it but I am. We live in the same town so I don't have worry about long distance. But I do see where you're coming from.

For the longest time, i did not have a cell phone either! I didn't really need one. Now that I have one, i don't know what i would do without it! Its quiet sad actually. Technology makes us dependent!

Yes it does. Well let a little mechanical object take over lives. What next?

You are not the only one that is not using a cell phone as my boss does not use a cell phone at all. She doesn't believe in using cell phones but I know she wished that she had one when her car broke down a while ago. I think that many of the younger people have cell phones because their friends have cell phone as well. The older adults use them for emergencies, business use as well as personal use. Everyone in my family has one and my cell phone is my only phone. I do not have a landline phone.

It just seems strange to me that cell phones have taken over our society. I hate to say it but a vast majority of cell phone users are very rude. Try talking with someone who has one. It's constantly ringing. You can't get a word in edge wise.

landline phone - no cell phone for me at this point. still a land line and voice mail girl
This lady does not own a cell phone and do not see me getting one just yet. They are still more expensive than my land line and I do not have tower out where I am. My girlfriend with a cell phone cannot use it in this area she has to wait to be in the "right" area for reception and signal. when it is more reliable and economical then maybe I will get one. Or if a real need arises, then my job better help me with the bill!

If I get a cell phone I'll have to wait until the price comes down, too. Right now it's bit too expensive for the budget I'm on.

I've had a cell phone for years. I first bought it because I traveled a lot by myself and thought it would be handy if I needed it if I got stranded. I still hardly use it, I never even get close to using half the minutes I have in my plan, and I have the lowest plan you can get. I don't understand how people can have a $300+ cell phone bill... I just don't need to talk to people that much.

I hardly travel at all. It does bother me that there is a possibility my electric chair could run out of juice. Hopefully cell phones will become more affordable soon.

If you haven't read the book, "Cell" by Stephen King, you should. You will never even consider a cell phone..lol I have one, my husband got it for me. I have a 6 year old daughter and am at home most of the time and keep it off. But when I leave the house I feel much better to have that phone with me. I broke down a few months ago on I-4 a busy interstate and if I had not had the phone, I would have been stuck in the dark, in the rain, on an interstate. With the phone I was able to just sit and wait. I am also able to call my Mother and Sister in another state without having to pay long distance charges. I think society has made it a "need" instead of a "want" as it use to be. Now everything must be "right now!" When you fill out a form anywhere even a Dr's Office they ask for your cell#. I use to swear I would never have one, and after reading the book, really do not like the one I have, but I feel I would be vulnerable on the road without it. Good topic by the way!! Thanks

Sorry for not replying earlier but my computer keeps acting up. I hate these things sometimes. LOL Anyways, I'm glad you did have a cell phone you would have really been in trouble without it. I want to read Cell but right now the finances don't allow me to buy it. But as soon as I can I will.

I can`t stand cell phones , I had one once and was paying $75 a week then i figured if I can afford that I can afford a land line. They are just too expensive and won`t pay for one

I agree. They might be convenient but they're far too expensive.

Well I feel it is absolutely necessary, see my old mother stays at home while I go to work, so whenever she feels lonely she calls me on cell. so it is good to keep in touch.

There are some situations where they are a good thing but most of the they are being bought because that is what everyone has so we just have one too.

I can live without my cell phone but still keep it hanging around. because today information is valuable. you can keep your relatives family freinds colleagues informed. you can share your and their moments of joy. you can keep in touch with them. now people dont have to think whether a person will be at home at this time before making a call.

No Freddy you are not :). I also don't own a cell phone but my son has one :(. I was thinking I was the only one left in the world who didn't own a cell phone. I was thinking of getting one just because I felt so left out. Thanks for making me feel better about not having a cell phone. :)

I'm glad I'm not the that doesn't have one. It would make no sense to me for everyone to be walking around with a cell phone. Who is that they have to talk to so urgently at any given momen?
