It is my holiday tradition to watch this movie, the old classic that used to come on CBS.
I've been watching it every year I had access to a TV & VCR since I was about 6 years old. I love this movie.
Anyone else remember it and love it? I'm pretty sure it still comes on CBS every year.
Here's some background info on the popular movie:
Burl Ives is the narrator (the voice of). This movie came out in 1964 (it's 42 years old - WOW!).
Trivia: Although Yukon Cornelius says he needs "gunpowder" and he has a revolver tucked in his belt, the politically correct toys released in 1999 in America have a knife instead of a revolver.
Goofs: Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Mrs. Claus goes out the door after Santa, the sound of the door slamming occurs before the door is shut.
What makes the doll on the Island of Misfit Toys a misfit?
The doll was not originally in the script of this special and was added later. According to Arthur Rankin, one of the producers of this special, her problem was more "psychological than physical."
Why does Yukon Cornelius keep licking his pick-ax?
In this TV special's original broadcast, the ending was much different. Right after Santa takes to the air from the North Pole, (before the sequence of the Island of Misfit Toys, which was not in the original, but added after many viewer complaints that Santa did not fulfill his promise) Donner, Mrs. Donner, and Clarice watch from down below and Donner says, "That's my buck." Then Yukon enters still showing his dogs how to "mush" properly and then throws his pick in the air, licks it and then says, "Peppermint! What I've been searching for! I've found me a peppermint mine....yahoooo!" This also explains why there are less than eight reindeer on the sleigh.
