A Japanese film adapted from and named after the Chinese classic “Journey to the West” has aroused heated debate recently. In the film, which appeared in the Cannes Film Festival last week, the storyline and characters have been greatly changed from the original. They loyal and valiant Monkey King turned into a neurotic monkey man wearing a mini-skirt. More surprisingly, the Tang Monk(Tang Seng)became a woman. Many Chinese criticize the newly released film, saying that it has ruined the classic and disgraced the country’s culture. Others say they don’t really care whether it accords with the original. Do you think it is all right to radically change a great classic?
