How many of you have seen the show Trinity Blood?? Imagine a world in the distant future where the Roman Catholic chruch was a military force and the Pope was considered a president/king. Now, i'm talking about the anime now...the basis is a great idea using religion and wars between to races, humans & vampires. we can analyze this anime and point out the similarities between the show and the church. the ideals of the 2 different military leaders, where the pastors and nuns are no longer peacful, but cary guns and weapons and act as a police in some ways. as a christian this show is just great to watch, and the idea behind it, very interesting...do yo think that this is a possibility in the future?? ---------------------------------- The series takes place an indeterminate time in the future, long after an apocalyptic war destroyed civilization, but after humanity reestablished itself. In this future world, the Roman Catholic Church has become a major military power, whose goals include the protection of humanity against the vampiric Methuselahs, who prey upon mankind (or "Terrans" as they call humans). The seat of power is the Vatican city, appearing as an attractive place with traditional European architecture and likely the same Vatican city in the real world (albeit perhaps rebuilt following the previous war). The Methuselahs are themselves another major political and military force. Their capital of Byzantium (presumably built on the site of the real world's Byzantium) appears as an elegant metropolis, surrounded by a field of particles which filters out UV radiation thus protecting the methuselah population. Both sides in this conflict are in a barely contained cold war against each other. The current countries use "lost technologies", remnants from before the war. These include airships, missiles, computers, etc. Worth noting is a third great power, Albion. It is almost definitely a future version of modern day Britain, with Buckingham Palace clearly seen in a number of episodes, reigned over by a monarchy. It is characterised by its larger arsenal of lost technology and weapons than the Vatican. Other states are rarely mentioned but the novelised/manga version does refer to other countries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_Blood ------------------------------------------------------ Official US site http://www.trinityblood.tv/

I'm a big fan of the anime. The novels are ten times better, but that's normally the way it goes. The anime plot gets pretty rushed and convoluted after the Silent Noise arc, which bothers me some. But it's beautifully done and keeps to the world that the author created in his books. The religious commentary is amazing - it really gets into the different aspects of religion. How it's a tool for power and control - as shown both through Cardinal De Medici as a character and through the way both Francesco and Catherina essentially control Allessandro - and how it's a tool for salvation - as shown through both Abel and Esther's journeys of self discovery and recovery. I think what I like the most is how while all of AX are religious, they don't fall back on religion for everything. They don't preach or make a huge deal of their faith, it's just a part of them. Abel's search for salvation has dozens of facets, only one of them religious. TB plays merry heck with religion, mythos and literary classics. It's really a fascinating blend of literature and history.

The first volume of the manga is out, you can pick it up in any bookstore. The first novel is set to be released in America next month. The manga is different from the anime and the novels - the novels are the core canon, and everything else pales in comparison to them.

You says: "Imagine a world in the distant future where the Roman Catholic chruch was a military force and the Pope was considered a president/king." It's not to hard to imagine. The Crusades were usually ordered by popes. "Holy Leagues" of Catholic states formed military alliances at the call of popes to fight the Ottomans many times. With the Pope being the figurehead of the church, he was basically the king/ruler supreme. I will definitely check out the Trinity Blood. I've not heard of it before and it does sound like something I'd be interested in. Thanks for the links.

Heck yes! I love Trinity Blood! It's like Greg Aryes said at OMGcon, "It's like if Hellsing and Trigun had a baby, this would be it." Greg Aryes is the voice actor for the whimpy Pope in the series. He's so cool! (I've got his autograph!) Trinity Blood has it all: action mixed with fantasy, drama laced with humor, and enough mystery that keeps you watching the show to find out 'What is Abel Nightroad?'

As far as vampires for sure, I don't know. But it is a very interesting idea. I tend to think that someday there will be a great war between good and evil, a Heavenly or Christian army will most likely be engaged in some sort of was with evil. But whether or not it will be in our world as we know it, or in our afterlife, I don't know.
