it quite intrigues me that even though the whole idea behind a fight club is to go beyond rules, its basis is the set of rules that tyler durden states.. ironically enough, the membership count increases BECAUSE the members break the first two rules of the club.. wow!!

Fight Club is about freedom. And Tyler wanted the first two rules to be broken.

yeah.. exactly what makes the irony work so well.. it's quite different and coherent when compared to the way the book has been written, though.. thanks for your response

I never read the book, but I've seen the movie. I think I'm the only one in the world who thinks it's terrible...I mean, come on...a MOVIE about Buddhist principles and anti-consumerism? And the worst part is that a lot of people were like "hmm..maybe that had an underpinning point that I didn't quite get...I know, I'll buy another ticket and see it again." *facepalm*

i find it amusing that the rule of not to talk about fight club even existed. i think maybe the rule was there on purpose to make people talk. most good clubs work on word-of-mouth anyway. tyler was smart, so he must have thought about that. how to make the club grow at a quick pace? make people feel they are in a 'special' or 'secret' club....they won't be able to keep their mouths closed, and then the club will expand :)

I think that they would just invite people and not tell them where they are going to, so they would not break the rules.

the rules were a plot device used by chuck palahniul to get through a lot of exposition without being to wordy. that's what he said in the commentary anyway

Yes, that's definitely the case there. They wanted all men to break the rules and initiate project Mayhem. It was all Tyler's crazy idea and his purpose was really to push too far others. However it worked fine with the person who created Tyler =D
