Is being too hygienic making our kids more frail?

I'm just looking at my little niece, she is turning 8 and since a toddler, she has been a little bit more fragile. She was hospitalized twice and I just got to know that today, she has been vomiting and apparently, there is some virus going round and a lot of kids are falling sick. Maybe it's the weather, it's been raining for days here!
I just wonder why is it that kids nowadays tend to fall sick easily. Is it because of over worrying young parents over hygiene? It's like, when I see them in the park, parents are weary when their kids play around, touch the floor etc and kids are told not to do it because it's dirty. It's not that I was brought up in unhygienic environment or that I'm super strong, but I don't remember being a child who fell sick easily. Or my generation, most of us, though not exactly that fit now, but at least, don't fall sick that easily.
I don't know, what is your view? Maybe during my generation when we were much younger, our parents just let us really explore on our own. I would roll on the ground, probably have eaten sand when I was at the beach. Haha...I don't know, but at least, I didn't have parents that were super protective over my environment.

Being overly protective of your child against dirt is sometimes too much. Our bodies immune system actually makes our body immune to some sickness because of being exposed to certain microorganisms (found in dirt or things). I'm not saying too that you must also let them always touch dirty things.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. There must still be a balance at the end.
