How many gives should you buy your child for christmas?

What is the appropriate amount of gifts for Christmas? Should you just buy them as many as they want? If you do this than doesnt that spoil them? Should you set a number or just tell them to pick a few things that they want the most? After all they also get gifts from family and friends. Please tell me what you think about this.
