What's the big deal?

In Louisville Kentucky (about 45 min from my town) there is a big up roar about changing one of the street names in the Portland area. The street right now is 22nd Street. People are trying to get it changed to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And other people are very upset about it saying that the community is mostly Irish, German, & Catholic and doesn't want it to be named after Dr. King. Why? I just don't understand that. This is America - not Ireland or Germany and Dr. King was a great leader and did a lot of good things for this country. So what's the big deal? It's not like the street already has a name - it has a number. And that's not why they're so upset! Here's a link to our local news stations report on it : http://www.wave3.com/Global/story.asp?S=5833936&nav=menu31_3_1

From what was said in that article the residents were upset at not being consulted on it and just being told the street would be changed. Also I can see part of the point others might have about namign the street after Dr. King. Don't get me wrong, the man did a lot of good. He was a great civil leader and promoted some wonderful beliefs however he was not the only one. He is not the only person to have done great things for the people of this country. He is not the only American to have won the nobel prize. Others have done amazing things for this country and the people in it yet they are pretty much ignored. Almost every city I go to has a Martin Luther King Jr. road someplace in it. Yes he did great things but why not allow others to be honored as well. Why is it so important that he have a street named after him?

You bring up a really good point. The news cast of it that I seen the people seemed to be more upset do to his race. I didn't hear them give another alternative to it. I'm not even sure how it turned out in the end. I guess I'll have to check on that one. :)
