Is the universe expanding?

Do you think the universe is expanding as modern astronomy has told us? Do you think it will continue to expand forever or eventually collapse onto itself? Or will it reach an equilibrium point where it is still and neither expanding or contracting.

As yet I have to hear a definition of the universe that makes me understand what it really is. I recall when I was young being told that the universe ended at a brick wall, after thinking aboiut it for a few seconds I asked what was at the other side of the wall. I never got an answer. Another explanation I've heard is that the universe is never ending, a very difficult concept to grasp. But, if this is the correct explanation how can the universe be expanding? I don't think I will ever make it as an astronomer, I can barely identify the moon ;)
